Hey guys. So here we are. At the brink of a new year. Supposedly all in a festive mood. But even if you’re not (I know I’m not), maybe it’s worth trying to be. Life is so hard, duties of everyday responsibilities can wear us down. This season comes once a year and makes random Tuesday feel special. And I really like that. We somehow get to forget all about the shopping list, the laundry, or how that one person gave us that weird look when we said that one thing. It’s a chance to just be present, even if only briefly.
The job market is slowing down and will ramp up again by mid-Jan, so that’s when I’ll return as well. Wishing you all a moment of peace and joy; however, it may find you!
Happy holidays! ✨

Articles I loved this week
The design of getting hired: On knowing your audience, clarity over cleverness, and why slow is smooth.
Anything by Raven Smith. He is hilarious as much as he’s talented, and he’s now on Substack! His books, especially Men is ridiculously funny but not just that; he goes deep, and he takes you with him. Here’s an audio preview of his book—god, he’s good.
End of mom guilt. This piece is almost 3 years old, and though that’s old for an article, it’s still pertinent—as any mum would tell you—mum guilt never went away. So it’s a good reminder. And if you’re not a mum (or you are a mum and don’t have time to read), this is the main takeaway.
Mind Drifts
I came across this idea in Jia Tolentino’s piece a while ago, and it stuck with me ever since—especially the opening sentence. It got me thinking about how readily we (I mean both me and my partner, but also society at large) spend exorbitant amounts of money on things like cars, tech gadgets, hobbies—even something as mundane as curtains. But then when it comes to care—domestic, health, child, even hospitality—we baulk at the price as if it’s some kind of devil’s pact.
What is it going to do to us to pay an extra $/£/€ 1.50, and why do we care so much there? It’s just incredibly fascinating to me. And to be honest, it’s the women (the cleaners, the nannies) who make my life not only manageable but meaningful.
So here’s my little ode to Claudia, Theresa, Amanda, Ai, and other lovely women in my life who make my life a place where I don’t break down. And for the record, I realise the sheer privilege of being able to occasionally hire help. And from this place, I feel it’s important to acknowledge and celebrate the “village” that supports us.
